As the weather gets warmer and the days become longer, we are all counting down to patio season. Whether you have a patio off of your home, a deck, or a balcony, we have a few tips to help you prepare.

Clean Up

If your outdoor space went unused in the colder months, now is the time to get it cleaned up and ready for use. Sweep up floor surfaces, and pay attention to any areas that may need repair, like faded wood or cracks in brick or stone.

This is also a good time to clean your patio door. Sliding patio doors, like our product line, offer easy maintenance year-round, but it’s always a good idea to take extra care when you are focusing on the patio. We recommend cleaning patio doors on a semi-annual basis to keep tracks clear of dirt and debris. Simple soap and water does the trick for cleaning both vinyl and glass. Check out our maintenance manual for more detailed information, including how to clean the windows that may also be visible from your patio.

Bring Out the Furniture

An outdoor space isn’t very fun without a place to relax. Some people use their patio as lounging areas, with chairs, hammocks, or benches. Others prefer it as a dining space, with table sets better suited for sharing a meal. And, some outdoor areas are large enough to serve multiple purposes. Whatever your plans are for your patio, it’s time to uncover the furniture, clean it up, and double-check for any issues requiring repair or replacement.

Add the Little Details

It is the small touches that make a patio so inviting. You may have everything you need in storage from the previous patio season, including glassware, lighting, and decor. Again, you will want to bring it out of storage, dust it off, and test it all out to be sure it is in as good of shape as you left it.

Of course, it is always fun to redecorate, and patio decor details are often not that expensive. A different color scheme or atmosphere is easily achieved with a few new pillows, lights, or a shady spot achieved with an umbrella.

Make Storage Space

As you are pulling all of these items out from storage, consider if your storage space is doing its job well. You may want to invest in more storage, from something as small as a deck box, to putting up a well-made shed. If your storage solution is working as-is, it’s still a good time to sort through what you have put away and get rid of anything that is broken, worn, or outdated.

Starting a Patio Space from Scratch

If you don’t have a patio but are longing for one — especially after reading this! — there is no time like now to get started. Many of these tips still apply: you will have to select and clean an area for your patio, choose the right patio door for your needs, and invest in furniture, storage, and the small details that make a patio truly delightful.
